Tech billionaire Elon Musk just had his xAI company launch two new and improved versions of the Grok chatbot called Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini.
The latest offerings promise enhanced performances over past models including the best capabilities to generate pictures. This will allow X to produce images through the social media app directly.
The company says it’s so excited for the new launch and it’s even giving users a little sneak peek early on to see how far it’s come in this domain. The latest model will feature the best capabilities related to chat, reasoning, and coding. Furthermore, a new Grok-2 mini would also be released that’s a mini variant of the original Grok 2 chatbot.
The company confirmed how both models have undergone a period of successful testing and are now working in beta. It was not surprising to learn that it’s restricted to just those with Premium subscriptions so if you pay more, you can get more.
Musk did reveal how there are plans to have it launched through its Enterprise API soon.
The latest feature that allows image generation is powered by Black Forest Labs. Here, the most noteworthy point to remember is that all guardrails are removed. It’s unlike any other image-generating tool in the market as no safeguards are in place to prevent its misuse.
Critics are not happy as it’s already difficult to stop people from producing violent and explicit images through these tools. And now that Musk’s xAI is launching new models without any guardrails means more problems.
The company tried to justify the claim by adding that the guardrails seen on other tools are dumb and as per early reviews, image generation is actually better than that seen with Llama. Interestingly, it’s already producing political-themed imagery.
One such example was Trump in a turban and CEOs Musk and Zuckerberg fighting in a boxing ring. As per xAI, it’s just so much more fun this way when you don’t have to worry about restrictions.
We can only imagine how internet trolls will react to the decision. The US elections are coming soon and to launch new chatbots with such features can only be interesting. Lastly, xAI promises to help with bettering misinformation across social media. Only time can tell how successful it is on that front.
