Google Search Traffic Falls for News Publishers, Discover Traffic Surges, New Report

Newzdash’s data shows that Google is sending less traffic to news publishers through Google Web Search but the same publishers are getting good traffic on Google Discover. The report was based on analysis of 8.1 billion clicks on a number of news publishers on Google Web Console and comparing data from 2023 to data of 2024.

John Shehta, Newzdash founder, shared data on X, which shows that Google Web Search experienced a 10 points decline in traffic of news publishers while the news publishers on Google Discover got a 14 points increase. The decline in Google Web Search traffic can be attributed to the rise of AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. However, another study suggests that Google still dominates the search market despite competition from several AI search engines.

The traffic of news publishers on Google Discover saw a 14% increase from 41.6% to 55.6%. On the other hand, the traffic of news publishers on Google Web Search went down from 46.5% to 36%. Other types of searches like Video Search, Google News, Google Image, all saw a decline. Traffic on Google news went down from 7.3% to 6.0%. The question is whether Google Discover is reliable in terms of traffic or not? Experts doubt it.
