The night did not come without controversy. Previously, Politico reported that Harris’s campaign requested a slight change to the event — that the microphones follow their previously (and historically) established format of remaining on while each candidate’s counterpart is speaking.
“We have told ABC and other networks seeking to host a possible October debate that we believe both candidates’ mics should be live throughout the full broadcast,” the Harris campaign’s senior adviser, Brian Fallon told Politico.
“Our understanding is that Trump’s handlers prefer the muted microphone because they don’t think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own,” they continued.
