Most of us have gotten into a playful argument with someone over how to pronounce certain words (think “cray-on” vs. “cran”). But it turns out some pronunciation differences are trickier — some words like “Mary,” “marry,” and “merry” can sound different or identical based on your accent.
And if you grew up pronouncing them all the same way, you might not even be able to hear the difference. It’s like “Yanny vs. Laurel” and “the dress” debates all over again.
