“I told the girl I was born here, but my friend whispered to me that she couldn’t believe she just asked me that; I, for some reason, did not see it that way at the time. I figured since she was a white girl from Idaho, she was not used to being around a lot of POC. However, as the day went on, I began to think about it more and more. ‘Why DID she ask me that? and me specifically?’ Now that I’m older, I definitely see the situation differently. She assumed I wasn’t an American like her because of my features and the color of my skin. This was over 10 years ago, but I still remember it to this day. Luckily, in 2024, I come across fewer microaggressions than before (at least in person anyway!)”
