While Apple’s Sign In initiative may have launched in 2019 for a safe and convenient user experience, new reports are speaking about its misuse, along with other popular options including Google.
Several deepfake nude websites were called out for offering Apple’s security feature. This follows reports about various sign-in options from tech giants like Google and others being easily misused on such platforms
The goal of such individuals is simple. They want to make use of users’ images without taking consent and produce distasteful offerings. Shockingly the problem keeps on increasing.
Deepfakes is another name reserved for AI pictures, audio, as well as video where real people are altered digitally in some way or another. This is usually used for an array of unpleasant reasons like making high-profile personalities say scary things or produce nudes of another so they can blackmail intimidating victims. Other cases include young schoolboys going far to produce CSAM pictures of their female counterparts.
The problem with such images is how hard it becomes to detect them as software transforms into something more sophisticated.
As per tech media outlet Wired, six of the largest sites for deepfake pictures used Apple Sign-In options to make nudes. Other options for sign-ins included Google, Patreon, Discord, and Line.
The site says that including such options makes it seem like they were approved by the firms but obviously, that’s not the case. Meanwhile, another analysis showed how 16 of the largest websites for undressing and nudifying others had Google, Twitter, and Apple sign-ins as well.
This helps with the whole signing-in process and making accounts easy, seeming like they are so credible, and hence people fall into the trap of paying for credits and producing pictures. Moreover, the sign-in tools enable people to make use of any existing accounts to join deepfake websites.
Since the Sign In through Apple feature needs one developer account, the company knew it needed to take action swiftly. It’s therefore getting rid of all the developer accounts making use of this means.
Right now, both Apple and Discord confirmed that they removed developer accounts linked to certain pages. Meanwhile, Android maker Google vows to take strict action against any developer that violates its terms of service.
