What began as an April Fool’s joke turned out to be true. Over the weekend, ASUS released a trailer for a handheld gaming PC on their Twitter account, teasing that it “will let you take all your PC games outside of your gaming room.” However, earlier today, they tweeted that it was not a joke and that it was the real deal. Even YouTubers Dave2D and Linus had the opportunity to check it out.
The ROG Ally will have a 7-inch 1920 x 1080p display, according to ASUS. The aspect ratio is 16:9, as opposed to 16:10 and 800p resolution on the Steam Deck. The ROG Ally, on the other hand, has a refresh rate of 120Hz rather than 60Hz like its competitor. The Ally will be powered by a “custom” AMD Ryzen APU and Windows 11. The ability to use an external GPU is also missing from the Steam Deck. Those who do not wish to use the RDNA 3 graphics that come with this chipset can instead use their own GPU.
ASUS has yet to confirm the retail price when it is released. Given that Valve’s Steam Deck starts at $399 for 64GB of internal storage, ASUS should be able to compete with a significant amount of storage. If you’re interested in being notified when the ROG Ally is available for preorder, Best Buy will be selling it and has an information page set up on their site.
It’s pretty amusing to see a well-known computer/peripheral manufacturer make a joke and then turn around and claim it’s true. We’ll have to wait and see what else the ROG Ally has to offer.
