Yagi the Bookshop Goat, by Fumi Furukawa, is a boys love manga staring anthropomorphized animals trying to sort out their feelings for each other while running a bookstore. More than a few books are harmed during the process!
Synopsis:
Yagi loves books and his dream since he was a kid has been to work in a bookstore. As humble as this dream is, poor Yagi struggles to get hired because he is a goat and potential employers are biased against him (on a account of the stereotype that goats love to eat paper). Finally, a kind wolf named Ookami decides to give him a chance and hires him at his bookstore. This is Yagi’s big opportunity to prove himself! There’s just one problem – Yagi does love to chow down on books!
Can Yagi keep his snack cravings under control and become a model employee? And why exactly is Ookami willing to overlook so much of his merchandise getting nibbled on? Is he just a nice guy, or is Yagi more than just another employee to the big ol’ softy wolf?
Review:
Yagi the Bookshop Goat is an absolutely adorable boys love romance about the love that blooms between a ditzy and pure-hearted goat and a gruff but kind wolf.
Yagi might not always be able to resist taking a bite out of the store’s precious products, but he genuinely loves books and has a sincere desire to work in a bookshop. He also has a unique ability to ‘taste’ the words written or printed on a piece of paper. This gives him a singular perspective on literature and allows him to recommend books based on their flavours, turning his unfortunate tendency to eat books into an asset. Also, since Ookami’s bookstore is located in a carnivore district where it’s rare to see herbivores, Yagi is quite popular with the customers. Despite some mistakes and bumps along the way, he’s doing quite well at his dream job and everything seems to be going great – so long as he can avoid getting fired!
Ookami understands how passionate Yagi is about books and sympathizes with the discrimination he’s faced, having experienced his fair share of prejudice in his own life. He’s more than willing to help Yagi achieve his dream, but he also worries about Yagi working in an area full of predators. Yagi is so sweet and trusting and there are dangerous people in the area – including some that Yagi had thought were his friends!
Ookami’s protectiveness and Yagi’s cluelessness lead to many complications on their road to romance, but they’re both so cute that it winds up being a ton of fun to see them muddle through their misunderstandings. This is a light-hearted love story with plenty of humor and fluffy moments, as Ookami nurses his secret crush and Yagi quickly falls for his kind-hearted boss. Things heat up between the two as the story progresses – especially once Yagi gets curious and snacks on a sexy magazine (hilariously titled Monthly Pervs Magazine). It’s not all innocent blushing and longing glances, so be prepared for some more provocative scenes in the second half of the book.
If you’re in the mood for a humorous boys love manga that’s both cute and a bit spicy, Yagi the Bookshop Goat is a tasty and gratifying BL treat. I really enjoyed this manga and recommend that boys love fans give it a try.
