Zeikin de Katta Hon is a story about a rowdy high schooler and how he came to work at the local library. Everything started almost ten years ago. His parents always urged him to find answers to his questions on his own. They believed that finding the answers on your own will make them stay in your memories longer. Kiichi Ishidaira wanted to know why crocodiles would stay in the sun with their mouths open.
He borrowed a book from the library about crocodiles to learn more about them. However, he never got around to returning that book. We learn that his parents got divorced and he moved houses. So the book was lost in one of those movies. In the present Kiichi Ishidaira came to the Library to borrow another book. But he can’t since he never returned that book all those years ago.
He is at the Library to make a library card. Hayasemaru, one of the workers there comes to assist him. She checks the system and finds the issue. She makes it clear that if he does not replace the book, he cannot borrow another. Kiichi gives them money as reimbursement however since they are a government institution they cannot accept the money.

The only thing he can do is buy the same book from somewhere and return it to the library. Kiichi is definitely annoyed at this. He leaves the store and the clerks there assume that they will never see him again. To their surprise, they run into him at the bookstore. They decide to quietly observe him. Kiichi appears conflicted about what to do. He finally finds the book he lost.
He hovers around the section for some time before finally grabbing the book. He purchased the book making the clerks who were spying on him very happy. The very next day Kiichi returns the book and all is taken care of. However, the book Kiichi wanted to borrow is with someone else and so he has to come back another day if he wants to borrow it. Kiichi is annoyed but there is nothing he can do.
The next time around he sees Hayasemaru repairing books. She gives him the book he promised. Kiichi asks her what she was doing. She explains how older books tend to fall apart with age. She is using glue to fix most of the damage. He decides to help her with finding a piece of the book. He wants to know who ruined the book but is refused. So he takes a part-time position at the library to find the culprit.

In Zeikin de Katta Hon Chapter 49, we saw that the library inspection is still going on. Kiichi’s competitive nature is showing. Satou, another fellow part-time worker is a wizard with the barcode scanner. She is the fastest in the store. She can scan upwards of 5000 books in 3 hours. She is very serious about her work, unlike Kiichi.
Kiichi works at the library because he thinks it’s fun. Satou on the other hand aims at being the most efficient worker she can be. Kiichi thinks himself superior since he noticed something about the barcode placement. He remembers that when he was young the barcodes used to be horizontal but now it’s vertical. He asks about this all excited only to find out Satou already pointed that out a month prior.
Woakadono shares why this is. She goes through the procedures and explains how it’s different at different places. It all depends on the preference of that particular library. With no other option, he goes back to Satou for tips to increase his own scanning speeds. She gives him tips on how to become more efficient. She tells him how to hold the scanner in a particular way to maximize speed.

She also gives him tips on how to battle the exhaustion that comes from scanning so quickly. Kiichi absorbs all her advice and tries to implement it. Even though it was hard at first, he was able to scan about 3000 books. However, at the same time, Satou scanned 4800. Soon they were able to scan all the books ahead of schedule. The part-timers are given a well-needed break and cake for their efforts.

In the last chapter, we saw that it was the 3rd day of holding inspections. Furthermore, due to the combined effort of the part-timers, the scanning is complete. Since they have done their part they can take their leave. However, the full-time employees have to stay and deal with the rest of it. Missing books and such. They thank the part-timers for finishing their work so quickly.
Since they are on leave we might not get to see much of Kiichi or Satou in Chapter 50. Unless they decide to go out to celebrate their achievements at work. I doubt it since Kiichi looks pretty exhausted by the end of his shift. He probably will spend the whole day at home recovering. Hopefully, they can complete the inspection fast so they have some well-deserved rest as well.
