OpenAI's Military Ambitions: A New Frontier for AI
The makers of ChatGPT have collaborated with defense startup company Anduril Industries to create AI for the Pentagon.
Both firms just confirmed
yesterday that they will combine the models of OpenAI such as GPT-4o
and OpenAI o1 with software from Anduril to better the American military
defense against aerial attacks.
The partnership comes at a time
when OpenAI made its stance more subtle in terms of using models for
things like the military. While the policies still prevent models from
creating or using weapons, one line that spoke about explicitly tech
into warfare and military use was removed.
A spokesperson for OpenAI spoke about how this deal complied with the firm’s rules and regulations as it focused on systems that provide justification against aerial threats. The firm adds that such a collaboration does not cover other leading uses.
As per the Washington Post, this link is designed to better the tech for detecting and shooting down drones that serve as threats to the American military. As it is the Pentagon purchases Anduril’s Roadrunner drone interceptors to assist deterring of smaller drones. Such a startup sells sentry towers, military drones, and comms jammers. Other projects include autonomous submarines.
Both firms rolled out a collaboration to defend American military personnel and China’s rise in AI advancement. Such a link with OpenAI will enable using the best expertise in AI to address urgent matters related to Air Defense gaps around the globe.
As a unit, both companies spoke about a new commitment to create the best and most responsible solutions related to military and intelligence operators. It’s fast and accurate and can assist users in making the best and most accurate choices when stressed.
For
those who might be wondering, Anduril was co-founded by the makers of
Oculus Rift. It put down the foundation for the new Meta Quest Lineup
that holds a lion’s share of both the AR and VR market.
Sam
Altman who is the CEO for OpenAI says that the decision right now is to
provide the greatest amount of benefits to many people. This will offer
the best support to American-led efforts to make sure the technology
upholds all democratic values. As Altman mentioned, such deals will help
ensure OpenAI tech can protect American forces and work towards best
preserving national security responsibly.
So far, things do look promising but only time will tell how fruitful it turns out to be.
