Anisong Artist Maon Kurosaki Dies at 35

Anisong singer Maon Kurosaki, best known for performing Highschool of the Dead (High School of the Dead) and Toaru Majutsu no Index II (A Certain Magical Index II) ending themes, died on February 16 due to a worsening of her chronic illness. She was 35.

In a statement on Tuesday, Kurosaki’s agency Art One Entertainment expressed that it was a sudden event while they were discussing her future, including her summer schedule, and release of her own movie and new songs. The office thanked all of her fans and everyone involved. The wake and funeral were only attended by her close family members.

This comes after Kurosaki collapsed during a livestream concert in September 2021 and underwent emergency surgery for epidural hematoma—a condition in which a mass of blood forms in the space between the skull and the protective covering of the brain.

Born in Tokyo in January 1988, Kurosaki began working and performing at the Dear Stage bar in Akihabara and was noticed by music producer Akihiro Tomita. She subsequently made her major debut with the album HOTD under Geneon Universal Entertainment (now NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan).

Kurosaki performed for a number of anime titles, including Grisaia no Kajitsu (The Fruit of Grisaia), Jormungand: Perfect Order (Jormungand Season 2: Perfect Order), Drifters, Tokyo Ravens, and Danganronpa 3: The End of Kibougamine Gakuen – Mirai-hen. Her last performance was the ending theme for Tensei shitara Ken deshita (Reincarnated as a Sword).
