Cat Massage Therapy Volume 3 – Comics Worth Reading

It’s usually around the third volume that I start wondering if a series has legs. The idea behind Cat Massage Therapy by Haru Hisakawa is pretty simple, after all: having cats walk or sleep on you is relaxing. Could this concept support three books?

Yes, it turns out. Cat Massage Therapy volume 3 was a pleasure to read, a relaxing escape. The second book introduced some new “cast members” (cats), so this one just lets them do their things.

I can’t be near a cat, so I find it even more interesting to hear the characters talk about how warm or fluffy or reassuring or comfortable they are. They’re drawn so cute! Particularly the three kitten “trainees”. Even when they’re trying to do acupuncture with their claws.

There’s one chapter here that exponentially ramps out the cuteness with “dog massage therapy”. Another is about carrying kittens around in pockets. The stories are simple scenes, for the most part, but that’s part of the escapism — this is a manga for feeling, not thinking. The soft pastel coloring helps add to the spa-day feeling. It’s a very cozy manga.
