Mangaka: Haro Aso

Synopsis: Alice Ryouhei will leave high school soon, but he’s trying to avoid thinking about his future. Late one night, when he’s hanging out with his tough friend Karube and his silly, girl-crazy friend Chota, they see fireworks. After one blindingly bright explosion, they find themselves waking up in a different world. In this ‘Borderland,’ people are forced to either participate in potentially deadly games or simply die. Will Chota, Karube, and Ryouhei be able to survive this dangerous new world, and is there a way they can get back to their original lives?

Alice in Borderland. Another manga I’ve been meaning to get on and Halloween has given me a chance. The story is as follows, Ryouhei Arisu often wants escape the reality of life. After hanging out at a bar, Arisu and his best friends, Daikichi Karube and Chouta Segawa, wait for the first train to arrive in the morning. Suddenly, a colorful array of fireworks set off in the sky, and an enormous blinding firework renders them unconscious.

The trio finds themselves back at the bar covered in dust, discovering that the city has become a barren wasteland. But instead of being worried, Arisu feels alive for the very first time in his life and relishes the freedom of this lifeless city. However, his bliss is cut short when the group rashly enters a festival venue. Seeing its delicacies and lively ambiance, they think the place is a dream; unbeknownst to them, it will be the setting for their first deadly game.

Together with his friends, Arisu slowly enters the mysterious area known as the Borderland—an unknown country where every game puts their lives at stake, and a single misstep can lead to their demise.

There’s also J-drama(Netflix) based on it and that’s how I actually found out the manga. I planned on watching the series but I decided to read the manga instead of two reasons. One is that there are more seasons of the series in production and two a lot of people were saying that there were a lot of differences between the two. Ultimately I planned on reading the manga but I’ll also watch the series after it is fully completed because the trailer looked so cool.

Alice in Borderland has a very weird premise. It’s not really isekai so I don’t what to make of it but I like it. With this I’m reading and both watching(Squid Game) a death game. So far I really like the manga, especially the twist the at the beginning, it pretty much threw away whatever expectations I had for the series. It took an unexpected turn but I love it, there’s very few mangas that would be able to produce such a mass twist soon into the series because if it goes wrong the audience might drop it.

This is certainly different from other battle game mangas I’ve read and I’m curious too see how it develops. Have you read Alice in borderland? If so leave your opinions in the comments below.

Thank you for reading.
