Surprisingly, Barbie isn’t the first time Greta Gerwig has been shut out from the directing category. Following her Academy nomination for her solo directorial debut, Lady Bird (2017), and four other additional nominations, it was expected Little Women would follow suit.
Little Women received six Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan, Best Supporting for Florence Pugh, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score. Like the 2024 Oscars, Greta wasn’t acknowledged for her directing.
