'Ongaku' Director Kenji Iwaisawa Helms New Anime Movie

A new anime movie by the Ongaku (On-Gaku: Our Sound) director Kenji Iwaisawa titled Hina is Beautiful is in production, according to a report by entertainment news outlet Variety on Friday. The movie will use 2D animation and rotoscoping.

Iwaisawa is directing the movie and Takamasa Ooe (Drive My Car) is penning the script. Naoyuki Asano (Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!, Urusei Yatsura (2022)) is credited as the animation director and character designer. Hina is Beautiful will screen as a part of the Annecy Animation Showcase at this year’s Cannes’ Marché du Film on May 21.

Iwaisawa’s Ongaku anime movie, adapting Hiroyuki Oohashi‘s slice of life music manga, premiered in Japan in January 2020 after a seven-year production. A crowdfunding campaign to raise 3.5 million yen (approximately US$26,000) was launched in July 2018, which ended with over 4.1 million yen (approximately US$30,500).

Synopsis

The “highly entertaining action drama” is set in Izu, Japan, where men are fighting over a woman called Hina. What is it exactly that makes Hina mislead men? As the men try to reveal their true feelings for Hina, strong, muscly men also get involved and the sound of the festival drum signals the start of a confrontation. (Source: Variety, edited)
