Alien movies have always been a big deal, and this weekend’s Alien: Romulus is pretty significant. It’s been almost a decade since the last film, and this is the first (but not the last!) piece of Alien media after Disney bought Fox. With Fede Álvarez behind the camera with Ridley Scott as producer, it had some really good trailers and behind the scenes footage that teased good scares to come. Once early impressions came in pretty strong, it seemed to confirm what fans were hoping for: Alien was back.
Romulus has racked up largely solid reviews and reactions on social media, and being considered one of the better sequels of the series. Folks who’ve seen it are saying it’s plenty scary and atomospheric and gross like earlier films have been in the best way, and appreciate how it builds upon the previous movie. Conversely, there are some who feel like it takes too much from those prior films, and the wholly new swings don’t fully work, and may actually break the film in some ways. Even then, the ones who don’t care for it acknowledge that it looks great visually and that Álvarez did a good job in proving the franchise still has some blood left in it. Prey re-energized the Predator franchise, and the the same’s looking true for Romulus and its mothership franchise.
Since it’s the biggest genre movie of August, we want to know your thoughts on Alien: Romulus. Loved it, hated it, what you thought about its franchise connections—tell us all of that down in the comments below.
