Lately, I’ve been feeling some good shifter romance. Looking through Goodreads recommendations, Facebook groups, and Kindle Unlimited, I came upon this book. It’s the first standalone in a series of books following different characters in the same universe and wolf pack. I particularly wanted to read this one because the main character is deaf. I absolutely love reading fantasy books with main characters that have disabilities. It adds another kind of interest to the series as well as creating visibility and understanding for the disability. This first book is short and sweet, a fairly typical fated mates, werewolf story with plenty of smut right from the get-go. By the end, I really wanted more of the characters.

I was in the market for some sweet and smutty werewolf/shifter romance and this book provided just the thing and left me craving more. I love the fact that Robyn is deaf as it adds another level of interest to her character, whereas without it, she might have felt a little too bland. She’s feisty,strong, independent, and capable. The fact that she’s deaf doesn’t slow her down, just makes her frustrated when dealing with people. She made a good match for Keil’s more strong and teddy-bear like personality, injecting energy and mischief into their interactions and relationship.
Yet, I wish I got more. I wish the book was more of a slow-burn and we got to see and understand more about Robyn. I would have loved seeing more of her survival abilities, see her try to navigate and learn how to be a wolf, see her not fall so head over heels for Keil right at the get-go. I get the whole fated-mates, instant attraction trope, but it definitely felt like the romance went almost too fast. They were up to making out and having sex within a short couple days, and I almost wanted to Keil have to work for it. But I know a quick and smutty read can be good too, I just want more of her character and how she is by herself.
Fans of skiing and the Alaskan wilderness may like this book, especially if you’re looking for something comfy to read while stuck in a snowy cabin. It’s certainly steamy enough to warm you up. I definitely wanted to see more moments with them out in the wilderness, maybe using their skills to survive or see her out there as a wolf together with him just having a good time. We got a little bit of them out skiing, rescuing Keil’s brother from an avalanche, and fighting off some wolves on the ice, but it still felt lacking.
I know there’s other books in the series, but they all focus on other characters within the pack. It might be fun to check them out later, but I think I’m looking for something with more substance at this point.
