Zoom acquires employee engagement startup Workvivo

Zoom Video Communications Inc. has acquired Workvivo Ltd., a venture-backed startup with an employee engagement platform of the same name.

Zoom announced the deal today without disclosing financial terms. The company expects to close the acquisition by the end of the month. 

Cork, Ireland-based Workvivo provides an employee engagement platform that enables executives to share business updates with workers. Users can share posts, videos, podcasts and news articles. An embedded comment system enables workers to interact with the content published by their company’s leadership.

Workvivo displays updates in an activity feed that organizations can customize with their brand assets. According to the startup, its platform personalizes the activity feed for each employee. An automated translation tool localizes posts to help organizations with a presence in multiple markets share business updates more easily. 

In the Workvivo interface, the activity feed is located below a navigation bar that includes a search engine as well as shortcuts to other features. One such feature, Spaces, allows companies to create business content collections organized by topic. Another shortcut in the top navigation bar offers access to third-party productivity applications.

To help companies measure the popularity of their content, Workvivo offers a built-in analytics dashboard. It tracks metrics such as the number of workers who read posts on a regular basis. To collect more detailed data, executives can create employee surveys using a built-in polling tool.

The company says that its platform is used by more than 1 million workers at hundreds of companies. The startup’s installed base includes major brands such as Liberty Mutual Group Inc. and the operator of Madison Square Garden. Last June, after its most recent funding round, Workvivo disclosed that it had experienced “triple-digit growth” in the preceding three years but didn’t share absolute numbers.

The startup has raised more than $38 million from investors since launching in 2017. Between the start of 2020 and its most recent funding round in 2022, its workforce grew sixfold, to more than 120 employees.

“Workvivo has set the standard for employee communications, helping businesses reach and engage millions of employees worldwide,” said Zoom Chief Financial Officer Kelly Steckelberg. “Workvivo prioritizes ease-of-use and simplicity of design, offering the best user experience which is a perfect match to Zoom’s DNA.”

Zoom will integrate the startup’s software into its videoconferencing platform. The capabilities brought over from Workvivo will join the growing list of features that the company offers for the enterprise market. Previously, the videoconferencing firm introduced an artificial intelligence feature called Zoom Virtual Agent that can automatically answer customer support requests.
