Police procedural crime show on Acorn TV, The Brokenwood Mysteries continues week after week to bring to the small screen how a group of local detectives with a unique story arc in their character development solves many crimes and murders. With its hour-and-half format of storytelling, this Australian show manages to bring a different look at detective shows, each episode is different from the other concerning the crime, but we see how the characters of the police team, headed by odd-ball Mike Shepherd, the cynical Detective Simms and the calm and stubborn Chalmers approach to crime scenes while also navigating the ups and downs of their personal lives in aspects like co-worker relationships and their love lives.
In its ninth season, the Police team of Brokenwood has solved all sorts of crimes, from nuns found dead with a rope around their necks, a musical theatric performance that ended up in a horrid death, to the classic “whodunnit” at a manor following a death and inheritance dispute. But there’s nothing that can stand in the way of our crime investigation team and getting to the truth with each episode. The last episode was a bit of a “whodunnit” in a motel, where the guests had conflicting stories and alibis concerning a dead man.
The Brokenwood Mysteries Season 9 Episode 5 Recap
This episode begins with Sims moving into a new home, she’s being helped by Chalmers carrying a sofa into the new home, but the moving becomes interrupted when they get called for a crime scene. It’s a motel, a man’s been found lying dead next to the bed. Simms begins questioning the wife of the deceased, the coroner has a feeling that the woman isn’t too much affected by her hubby’s passing. The coroner informs Simms that our dead guy got killed by a tiny bullet, they initially thought something or someone hit him in the head.
Chalmers and Simms examine CCTV and construct a timeline, then Simms questions the motel manager, who tends to overshare details about how pesky and intrusive he is of his guests’ privacy. Then, Chalmers questions a pizza delivery guy because the dead man had pizza delivered to his motel room. Then, Simms talks to a bartender who points her to a cleaning lady who went to the motel with her boyfriend the night of the death, she’s evasive with her answers and covers for her boyfriend, even warning him of Simms’s incoming visit. As it turns out, the girl and boyfriend were having a party with the dead dude and his mistress, they were fiddling around with a gun, the gun went off and the guy ended up dead, who did it? The mistress, who tried to cover her tracks but was too clumsy and her accomplices couldn’t keep a straight story after Simms and Chalmers’ interrogations.

The next episode of Brokenwood implies a different crime and different situations, but, as we’ll see, the show picks up on the lives of the cops that solve those crimes. As such, we’ll see how Detective Sims continues to adapt to her new home after she was surprised by the hospitality of the neighbors and makes you wonder if this introvert liked the borscht they gave her. But on the crime side, we’re going on two wheels, a motorcycle, that is, because a biker gang arrived in town for a wedding, but one of the bikers, a gal named Debbie met her demise ruining the party and now it’s up to our police team to find out the circumstances surrounding her death.
